The Appellate Division provides legal representation involving appeals in criminal cases from local trial court decisions to the Twelfth District Court of Appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States. This division also litigates criminal post-conviction relief proceedings in the trial courts, litigates state actions in habeas corpus in defense of the Butler County Sheriff, defends local judges in state actions in mandamus, prohibition and procedendo, and acts as a liaison to the Ohio Attorney General's Office (Corrections Litigation Section and Capital Crimes Section) as to federal litigation concerning prisoners convicted in Butler County Courts. The attorneys of this division also assist the Criminal Division attorneys with legal research and writing of trial memoranda and supervise law clerks who research and draft legal documents for the Criminal and Appellate Divisions.
